Research Interests and Projects

Marianne Chamoun is a PhD candidate at Université Laval specializing in sexuality and disability. Her doctoral research explores the experience of sexuality of adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Broadly, her research interests focus on mental health among vulnerable populations (in community and detention facilities) and persons with disabilities, emphasizing sociophenomenological approaches within structural and contextual factors.

She was the Director of the Medical Center at Restart Center (Lebanon) from 2019 to 2025, a specialized organization dedicated to mental health services and the rehabilitation of victims of violence and torture. She co-established the medical center and has led its clinical and operational development.

She has led and contributed to several research initiatives at the intersection of mental health, detention facilities health systems and community-based care. In collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), she participated in the design and the research evaluating the impact of behavioral intervention or irregular migration. She also contributed and led studies assessing the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in detention facilities, generating evidence to inform service adaptation and policy response. In collaboration with the UK embassy and the Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) she designed a digital health care platform for detention facilities to promote the health management in detention facilities. Additionally, she served as a member of the Technical Review Team for the development of the “Unified Health Protocol” for detention facilities in Lebanon in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) contributing to the standardization and strengthening of health service delivery for individuals deprived of liberty. Through these collaborations, her work integrates research methodologies with operational implementation to advance evidence-based mental health practices in vulnerable settings. She is a member in both the National health working Group led by WHO and in the North Mental health working group led by Restart Center and co-led by the National Mental Health Program and a reviewer at the Nursing research Journal and the Canadian association of Schools of Nursing (CASN).
