Nursing Faculty Inducted into Local Honor Society
On Friday, January 27, 2012, three LAU nursing faculty were among the first nurse leaders inducted into the AUB School of Nursing Honor Society. Dr. Myrna Doumit and Mrs. Mira Abi Saad Youssef were inducted as alumni of AUB’s Hariri School of Nursing. Dr. Nancy Hoffart was inducted as a community leader. The establishment of the new AUB School of Nursing Honor Society is a first step toward the establishment of a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International in Lebanon. Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing, is a global community of nurse leaders. There are 475 Sigma Theta Tau chapters in 90 countries. The members of these chapters lead the profession through their scholarship, service and application of nursing science to improve health care.
Dr. Marilyn (Lynn) Lotas, 2011-2012 Fulbright Scholar at the Alice Ramez Chagoury School of Nursing, served as speaker for the induction ceremony. Her presentation was titled, “Childhood Hypertension: Anatomy of a Health Disparity.” Dr. Lotas reported on the work she is leading at the Francis Payne Bolton (FPB) School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, to address the health needs of children in the Cleveland public schools. The FPB School of Nursing has partnered with the Cleveland schools to screen students for conditions such as obesity and hypertension and work within the system to develop prevention efforts that will reduce the incidence of hypertension and other conditions.
